Johnson Controls Inc. has purchased 90 percent of a South American battery company, which includes its in-house plastics processing.

MAC of Yumbo, Colombia, already had a joint venture partnership with JCI, which is based in the Milwaukee suburb of Glendale, Wis., to produce and sell lead-acid batteries in Central and South America. The two companies had expanded their presence in Colombia and the Andean region of South America.

The company will now help to fill out a battery production footprint for JCI, which has manufacturing in Mexico and Brazil, the company said in a Nov. 8 news release.

MAC has vertically-integrated production, which includes production and processing of its own raw materials. It produces 3.4 million batteries annually and has 600 direct employees.
